Case Study: Optimizing Machine Performance Through ODS Consultation

During a recent project, I was brought in to consult with a manufacturing team experiencing high vibration levels in a critical piece of production equipment. The issue was affecting both throughput and long-term reliability. After reviewing baseline data and identifying some unusual resonant behavior, I recommended bringing in a dynamic motion specialist to perform an Operational Deflection Shape (ODS) analysis.

Working together, we captured vibration data under various running conditions and used the ODS results to visualize how different sections of the machine frame were responding. What we found was that certain areas of the structure were flexing more than expected under load, creating amplification zones that contributed to unstable operation at higher speeds.

Using this insight, we strategically reinforced specific sections of the frame and improved support in targeted locations. The outcome was a significant reduction in structural resonance, which allowed the machine to run at a higher operating speed with increased stability and reliability.

This collaboration not only resolved the immediate issue but also highlighted how combining analysis with practical mechanical adjustments can unlock hidden performance potential in existing equipment.
